Religion in Kyoto - Away From the Classroom: Tokyo Week 4

Reflecting back on my trip, I think about our class trip to Tokyo as being a huge highlight. Tokyo is a huge city with tons to do and lots of things to see. As a class, we went with the intention to see the Museum of Japanese Literature and the Great Buddha of Kamakura.

It was insanely hot and humid, but we had a great time as a class! We learned a lot about Buddhism and Japanese culture and had to reflect on the teachings by writing haikus and sending them to our professor.

Not only were our planned excursions great, but we also had a great time the next day in Harajuku at Kawaii Monster Cafe, where we got to watch surreal performances as a class. It was a huge contrast from our activities the day before, but was still another great look into more modern Japanese cultures.

Still, we had the weekend off and my group decided to book an Airbnb in Tokyo and stay until class started up again on Monday. We had a great time planning our own adventures and hanging out in our own accommodations. I'd highly recommend doing this if you take a trip outside of your usual city. It's a great time for bonding and for some independent travel!

Independently, we went to Tokyo's Team Lab Borderless, which was a breathtaking digital art museum and had so many unexpected and interactive pieces. We also went to Akihabara, which is the electronics and anime capital of Japan. We got to shop for some merchandise of our favorite anime characters while hanging out and finding good food. Later that night, I went to Shinjuku to take a look at Tokyo's nighttime views from atop the government building. It was a really great time of getting to experience Japan's culture in a short period of time.

Even the two hour bullet train ride there was great with friends! Tokyo was an awesome time for all the students and we had so much fun even though we were there for just 4 days. Definitely look into staying longer in a city away from your classroom!
