Week 4 in Copenhagen!

This week was a mix of exploring, working on my group project, and taking in more of what Copenhagen has to offer.

On Tuesday, after class, I went to the Danish Natural History Museum with my project groupmates. We got to walk through the butterfly house, which was really warm and full of butterflies flying around us. It was a cool break from the usual routine. After that, we wandered through the botanical garden, which was super peaceful and a nice way to wind down the afternoon.

On Wednesday, we went to the Danish Royal Library, also called the Black Diamond, to look for information that could help with our investigative journalism piece on climate education. The building itself was amazing. It’s really open, with lots of natural light coming in. From the top floor, there’s a great view of the harbor, and the architecture overall was really cool to see up close.

Thursday was definitely one of my favorite days I’ve had in Copenhagen so far. My class went on a three-hour bike tour of the city. I’d been wanting to ride a bike since I got here, but it felt a little intimidating at first because there are so many bikes on the road. Once we got going, it made total sense why Copenhagen is considered the biking capital of Europe. We covered a lot of ground during the tour and stopped at places like Christiania, the Little Mermaid, Circle Bridge, Israels Plads, and more. It felt so different from walking or taking the metro. Being on a bike made the city feel smaller in the best way, and everything felt much more connected. Our tour guide told us that most Danes don’t own cars because of the high taxes they would have to pay, which is why so many people choose to bike or use public transportation. The bike lanes here are very well designed, and it was such a fun and different way to explore the city. After the tour, I grabbed lunch with my groupmates and hosted an interview with a professor from the University of Copenhagen. She gave us some really helpful insight for our climate education story. Since the sun was still shining, we ended the day by swimming in the harbor. The water was cold but refreshing and made for a pretty great end to the day.

I’ve really enjoyed these last four weeks in Copenhagen, and I can’t believe the program ends in just seven days. I’m hoping to make the most of the time I have left here!
