Week 2: Exploring Catalunya
During my second week in the Cognitive Science Global Seminar in Barcelona, I had become familiar enough with the surroundings of my apartment and our campus at Plaza de Catalunya. Therefore, I began to venture further afield, exploring more areas and even places outside of Barcelona itself! My friends and I started using the train to visit nearby towns, broadening our horizons beyond the city's limits.
The first destination we explored was Sitges, a charming coastal town renowned for its beautiful beaches and picturesque walkways through narrow alleys. Despite the peak summer tourism season, which meant crowded trains and packed streets, the town's beauty far outweighed any discomfort caused by the throngs of visitors. We spent hours basking in the sun on the beach and strolling through the Greece-like narrow streets lined with white houses. The charm and allure of Sitges made it a memorable and worthwhile excursion.
In addition to daytime adventures, we began to explore Barcelona’s vibrant nightlife. One standout experience was visiting Mariposa Negra, an artsy bar with custom drinks that looked as if they came straight out of Picasso's studio. The bar's unique atmosphere and creative cocktails made it a delightful spot for an evening out.
Another highlight of the week was watching the Spain vs. England game, which Spain won. I experienced the game alongside my friends at Ovella Negra, a local sports bar that beams with life on important game days. The energy and excitement in the bar were palpable, making it an unforgettable way to enjoy the match.
Overall, my second week was a blend of further acclimatization and exciting exploration. From discovering new towns to immersing myself in the local nightlife, each day brought new experiences and deepened my appreciation for the rich culture and vibrant energy of the region. The combination of picturesque day trips and lively evenings made this week another remarkable chapter in my Barcelona adventure.
