Week 5: Farewell Barcelona
My final week in Barcelona began with a weekend trip to Madrid. We explored the beautiful gardens during our visit, wandered through El Rastro Mercado, and admired the Royal Palace of Madrid. The highlight of this trip was the Rastro Market, which spanned four streets and was filled with everything from thrift tents to artisan pieces to leather purse stands. As I walked through this busy market, the lively atmosphere was enhanced by a small group of musicians playing Spanish music. I couldn’t help but stop to admire the sight of people dancing and singing along. This experience was especially touching as it reminded me of my beautiful hometown in Mexico. It was nostalgic as it left a lasting impression on the close-knit community.
My return to Barcelona marked the beginning of a week dedicated to finalizing and polishing the projects we have been working on since week 1. The class component of this study abroad experience allowed me to adopt a new perspective on the politics and culture of Catalunya. One of the highlights was interviewing a bilingual member of the Catalunya community. Although finding someone to interview was challenging, I was honored to speak with our local baker. During the interview, she shared her story as a Catalana in Barcelona and proudly discussed her culture and traditions. Hearing her describe the struggles her mother tongue has faced due to political repression gave me a unique insight. During my time here, my Spanish proficiency has significantly improved from the course readings and interactions with members of this vibrant community. Aside from wrapping up my final projects, I made sure to enjoy my favorite tapas in Barcelona one last time: patatas bravas, gambas, and calamari a la romana.
As my departure from Barcelona approaches, the days seem to fly by. Although I am sad to leave, I cherish every second and every memory made here. The friendships I have formed over these five weeks have been truly remarkable. Thank you to the study abroad office and Kathy for all your guidance and support in making this opportunity possible. Farewell Barcelona, until next time.
