Getting Artsy: Describing one of the best moments
While in New Zealand, I was lucky enough to be able to see and do so much. Every class and every excursion was a chance for me to learn something, and I definitely have a few favorite experiences.
During our first weekend, we drove up to Paihia, a small beach town in the Bay of Islands. Once we got there, the sun was setting and it was around dinner. Our group dropped off our things at the hostel we were staying at, then we headed out towards the center of town.
As we reached the end of the block we came to the now dark beach, the cold air biting our noses and the sound of the quiet waves bring a sense of calm. Not even a minute later, however, rain came down on us in buckets. Shrieks that were a mixture of surprise and excitement sounded throughout our group as people were scrambling for their hoods and umbrellas. We began running down the road in the hopes of finding a restaurant to head into for dinner. Umbrellas were shared as we continued down the road, fighting the sudden strong wind as it hit us in the face, trying its hardest to soak us through.
We finally gave up and ran into the first place we spotted, a small place where live music was echoing out into the night over the downpour. We got a couple orders of fish and chips, sat at a large table with a few other foreigners and a few locals, and enjoyed the warmth emanating from the space heaters nearby. Every song that we recognized led to us joining in with the performers in a fun chorus and the sound of the pounding rain as our background. It was in this moment of pure happiness that I thought, "This is what life is about." Exploring new places, making the best of crazy circumstances, enjoying the simple things in life with your friends by your side. It was one of the best evenings of the trip.
