Final Week in Paris by :Daniel Alfaro
This whole study abroad experience was something truly life-changing. It was not only an experience where I immersed myself in French culture, but also an experience that allowed me to learn a lot about myself. It gave me true independence when navigating the city using public transportation. I learned the basics of getting around using French. I felt very attached to Paris when it was time to leave.
I did so much through my time abroad, like visiting museums such as the Louvre, where I saw the Mona Lisa among other paintings, and the history behind each of them. I visited cafe shops where I got savory croissants, macarons, and coffee. I tried many French plates that for the first time such as snails and beef bullion. Every food item I tried was comforting and made Paris feel even more special.
I also visited many parks, thrift shops, and landmarks. The Eiffel Tower itself was always very motivating; it always made me reflect on my life and everything I had to do to get to this point in time. I also met a lot of people and climbed up the Eiffel Tower. This experience was also so rewarding as it made me walk an average of 25-30k steps a day, so this way I didn't feel guilty about all the pastries I would consume.
I think the hardest part of being abroad at first was learning to get around since the city is very big and as a first timer, it can be a little overwhelming. Also, learning when to call home due to the nine-hour ahead difference. I also talked with locals who also know English and told them to give me advice to not seem like a bad tourists, and they said it was all about having respect and consideration in public spaces. I felt like I was in college, just a whole different universe. It was truly amazing.
During my last week, I spent time going to my favorite food spots, Montamarte, where I got a painting portrait of myself. I also studied hard for my finals and passed my classes. I think learning French sign language was very inspiring, and what better way to learn it than in the city of France itself.
Paris will forever be "the city of light", not only because it is always lit up, but because I felt a spark in me that reminded me that hard work and dedication will always lead to dreams coming true. Paris is not just a city known for its art history, landmarks and food, it is a city that inspires, fulfills, and allows oneself to dream.
I am truly blessed and thankful for this scholarship that allowed my dream of going abroad come true. After immersing myself in a new culture this summer, I feel ready to share the insight of this culture to everyone. I want to continue inspiring people around me to keep chasing after their dreams and to study abroad, since it's an experience that opens your mind and makes you have more awareness of the world. It was amazing, and I will forever be grateful for this opportunity.
